Enduring Fabric: The Reinvention of the Crown Cork and Seal Site

AIA Baltimore's Historic Resources Committee presents its third annual Spring Garden Party and Lecture featuring Tom Liebel, FAIA. Join us as this year's Garden Party takes an industrial turn!

The invention of the crown cork in 1892 transformed not only the bottling industry, but also the trajectory of industrial manufacturing in the United States—firmly anchoring Baltimore as a center of innovation and production. The Eastern Avenue campus of Crown Cork & Seal grew into a sprawling industrial complex of more than one million square feet, reflecting a legacy of technological advancement, labor history, and urban evolution. Today, this historic site stands at a pivotal moment. Through a thoughtful and ambitious adaptive reuse strategy, the campus is being reimagined as a vibrant, mixed-use destination—one that honors its industrial heritage while positioning it for a resilient and sustainable future. This presentation will trace the arc from invention to industrial prominence to reinvention, exploring how preservation, design, and community engagement can converge to unlock new value in legacy places. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges inherent in repositioning large-scale historic industrial assets—and the critical role such projects play in shaping the next chapter of Baltimore’s built environment.
